Hypothesis 3

This thesis presents the hypothesis that many stresses of urban commuting can be seriously ameliorated by using the new technology of "augmented reality" to radically improve the commuting experience. Whether the commuting stresses are environmental, psychological, or social, there can nearly always be found ways to drastically improve the commuting experience through this technology of overlaying digital data onto the real world.

In contrast to the current experience of commuting, which is a merely functional, often stressful ordeal, with limited choices and a one-size-fits-all aesthetic, cutting edge technology provided by digital mobile devices could qualitatively enhance the way we interact with our surroundings. It would scale down public space to personal space, which everyone could control, and manage their own experience to create a culture of information, pleasure and relative autonomy.

Such a hypothesis would transform commuting into ‘the Third Place'; i.e, a place anchoring community life in positive aesthetic and social experiences, promoting happiness , well-being and intellectual growth. It would make commuting into a highly valued, sought-after experience, generally improving the quality of life in urban centers--even beyond the commute itself.
